Gion Festival 【July 1 (Sunday) to 31 (Tuesday), 2018】
This Shinto ritual of the Yasaka Shrine dating back approximately 1,100 years takes place over one month.
It is said to have originated from a ceremony for appeasing spirits to end the plague during the Heian period (794 to 1185).
The 'yamahoko' decorated float parades on July 17 and 24 are the climax of the festival and are visited by many tourists from Japan and overseas.
