Gozan no Okuribi' Daimonji Bonfire
This is a traditional event held every year after *Obon on August 16.
Massive bonfires are lit in the shape of enormous Japanese characters written on five mountains as a prayer for the safe return to heaven of ancestors and people who have passed away.
A very famous event in Japan, the way in which the bonfires are lit one mountain at a time is sensational and mystifying.
*Obon - The period of Buddhist memorial service held for ancestors and family and close friends who have passed away. Spirits of the deceased are said to return to earth during the Obon period.
