OKU Experience Exploring Kyoto's Mountain Recesses "Miyama Kayabuki no Sato" with a Local Guide

Kyoto's Miyama Town is located about 90 minutes by car from the City of Kyoto. At Miyama Kayabuki no Sato (Miyama's Thatched Roof Village), 39 thatched roof homes remain and are inhabited by people. The thatched roof culture has been passed down for thousands of years as traditional Japanese architecture and has found itself in the spotlight in recent years as a symbol of SDGs and the ultimate in eco-friendly housing. The locals who proudly share their stories about preserving the kayabuki roof and way of life are one of the allures of this area.

In this program, a local guide informs you about the kayabuki roof preservation initiatives, people's lifestyles, and the mechanics of the roofs.

This guided tour provides impressive scenery created by the skills of kayabuki craftsmen registered as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage along with first-hand experience with the local lifestyles and attitudes towards preservation.

  Get an overview of Kayabuki no Sato and learn about the visible parts (e.g., water hose, roofs). There is not much time for Q&A
• [45-minute Course] (Walking distance about 0.5 km)
  In addition to the above, learn about the characteristics of the village, annual events, and seasonal scenery.
• [60-minute Course] (Walking distance about 0.5 km)
  In addition to the above, learn about what interests you, such as villagers' way of life, local shrines, and the great fire.

[Circumstances for cancellation of the program]

1. When there is a heavy rainfall or strong wind alert in Nantan City as of 8:30 a.m. on the day
2. When a state of emergency has been declared in Kyoto prefecture
3. When there are not enough participants (at least 2)

*The program will generally be carried out even in rainy weather.

- Please wear comfortable clothing and shoes for walking.
- Please bring your own sunscreen and bug repellent.
- Please refrain from recording video and audio during the tour.
- Please wear a mask in the village.
- Please contact us if you will be more than 15 minutes late to arrive.
- We may treat your booking as a cancellation if you are more than 30 minutes late to arrive.
- Please give yourself plenty of time to arrive.
